Article III Academic
Freedom
Key points are:
-
It is agreed that academic
freedom is essential to the wellbeing of the college;
-
Faculty are entitled to full
freedom in research and publication as long as other academic duties
are adequately performed. Research for pecuniary (financial) return
should be based on an understanding with the College administration;
-
Faculty are entitled to freedom
in the classroom in discussing their subject, but should be careful
not to introduce unrelated controversial subject matter. In no way
should this be interpreted to discourage what is “controversial”;
When writing or speaking, it is acknowledged that faculty are free
from institutional censorship or discipline but at all times should
be accurate, exercise appropriate restraint, show respect for the
opinions of others, and make every effort to indicate that they are
not speaking for the institution;
-
Administrators and faculty
shall protect, defend, and promote both academic freedom and
academic responsibility.
