FAQ #7 - Compensation for Quarter to Semester Conversion

Q:    How and when will I be compensated for my work when I convert the quarter courses that I now teach into semester courses?

A:    Faculty will be compensated three hours of overload pay (at the current maximum rate) for every one contact hour (not credit hour) of a given semester course. For example, faculty converting a semester course that is three contact hours would be paid a total of nine overload hours of compensation (which, at the current rate, is…9 hours x $35.00 per hour = $315) for the course.
Percentages of the compensation for a converted semester course will be paid to faculty in the following manner:

   a. 20% of the course conversion compensation for preparing and presenting the new syllabus to the curriculum committee (and making certain the new course is placed on the curriculum worksheet and has a corresponding course data sheet). This is work a number of faculty have already completed.

   b. 70% of the course conversion compensation for a semester schedule of the course, complete study guides, lecture notes and student handouts. (Note: In order to be eligible for compensation, this component of the course conversion must be approved by the department/dean according to the timeline set forth in the MOU.)

   c. 10% of course conversion compensation for development of the schedule for and the content of quizzes, tests/final and papers/projects used in the course. (Note: In order to be eligible for compensation, this component must also meet the same timeline as section b. - above.)

The agreement also allows the flexibility for department faculty, department chairs, and deans to collaborate on how best to divide the work--and the compensation--for a course taught by several full-time faculty. The payment to faculty will be done when a particular benchmark from above is completed and approved. The forms required to process payment to faculty are currently being developed. Faculty members are urged to communicate with their chairs/deans to initiate and follow this process of course conversion compensation.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was reached recently between the NCSFA and the College Administration.  Click here to read the MOU.
