FAQ #5 - Who's responsible - Faculty Caucus or NCSFA-AAUP?

Q:    Is there a difference between Faculty Caucus and the NCSFA-AAUP?  To whom should I take my complaint - Faculty Caucus, NCSFA-AAUP or both?

A:  There is a significant difference between the two groups! The agreement between the NCSFA-AAUP and NC State College recognizes the Faculty Caucus as the primary means through which the faculty are engaged in governance with respect to academic matters.

Article VII of the CBA empowers the Faculty Caucus and the NCSFA-AAUP works diligently to insure this is honored. Faculty with concerns not necessarily related to the contract (e.g., academic issues) should contact the Faculty Caucus to have such concerns addressed. The NCSFA-AAUP regularly sends items to the Faculty Caucus either because the contract states this must be done (e.g., faculty performance evaluation) or because the issue would be best addressed by Faculty Caucus (e.g., academic quality issues).

It is important to note that the Faculty Caucus represents full-time and adjunct faculty. Its membership includes 12 faculty (9 full-time and 3 adjunct). The leadership of the NCSFA-AAUP and Faculty Caucus are separate entities and currently only 3 of the 12 Caucus members are also members of the NCSFA-AAUP Executive Committee.

Since the ratification of the CBA, Faculty Caucus’s workload has been steadily increasing. They are working on such issues as faculty performance evaluation, faculty control of curriculum and instruction questions, and search committee assignments for academic chairs and new faculty. More importantly, they serve as the go-to group insuring faculty are involved in college governance. The Faculty Caucus facilitator meets regularly with key campus-wide leaders as a member of the Intergovernmental Group (members include the President, Vice President, Staff Caucus Facilitator, Management Advisory Council Facilitator and others).
