FAQ #2 - How Load is Calculated? Q: Did anything change with how my load is calculated? What happened as a result of the discussions about load last quarter?
A: The approach for calculating load has changed on a trial basis for the remainder of the academic year. Although it has changed, the changes may or may not impact you. Those that traditionally ALWAYS see their load calculated on a contact hour basis probably have not and will not see an impact. Starting with Winter Quarter, here is the method now used to calculate your load: 1. Load calculations (e.g., determining to pay by credit v. contact) is always done to benefit the faculty member after calculating load both ways using all assigned courses/load. 2. Annual load requirements for 3 quarter contracts will be 45 credit, 54 contact, OR 3 quarters of making load by either credit or contact. Annual load requirement for 4 quarter contracts will be 60 credit, 72 contact, OR 4 quarters of making load by either credit or contact. 3. Section 21.03 of the CBA – special load calculations (this section of the contract addresses load calculations for courses that are based on student enrollment rather than credit hours) will be calculated according to the following: a 2 credit hour practicum should be calculated .5 credit hour/student for credit OR .5 contact hour/student for contact.
EXAMPLE LOAD CALCULATION: Using the following example, a faculty member would be paid based on 19 credit hours rather than 21 contact hours because a credit hour calculation is more beneficial to the faculty member. CREDIT CONTACT Class #1: XXX102 4 hrs 4 hrs Class #2: XXX103 4 hrs 6 hrs Class #3: XXX104 3 hrs 3 hrs Class #4: XXX105 4 hrs 4 hrs Class #5: XXX106 (PRA)* 4 hrs (8 students @.5/student) or 4 hrs (8 students @ .5/student) Totals Hours: 19 hrs 21 hrs – 15 - 18 Overload Hours: 4 3 *PRA means this is a Practicum class. Calculations will vary based on the number of students enrolled in the practicum.
NOTE: Realize this is being used on a trial basis. If any issue with this calculation approach occurs, either you, or your NCSFA-AAUP representative, should contact the NCSFA-AAUP Contract Administrator (Jean Jones) as soon as possible. |
